・Prevent frost damage with sprinklers
・In 1980, we succeeded in preventing frost damage using sprinklers for the first time in Japan.
■Use of latent heat
Water releases heat when it changes from water (liquid) to ice (solid). This heat is called latent heat because it cannot be measured with a thermometer. This heat releases 80 cal when water (liquid) turns into solid (ice). Also, when ice (solid) changes to water (liquid), it absorbs 80 cal. This phenomenon can be used to prevent frost damage with sprinklers.
■Preventing frost damage with sprinklers
When using sprinklers to prevent frost damage, start watering slightly before frost. When frost begins to fall, the surface of the leaves freezes a little, but new water droplets arrive one after another on the frozen water droplets, so the leaf surface becomes a mixture of ice and water, and due to latent heat, it is always at 0°C. It is maintained. Because of this, it never freezes completely and stays fresh. This allows sprinklers to prevent frost damage.
■Caution
When using sprinklers to prevent frost damage, water must be sprinkled for a long time until the temperature rises, so a large water source is required.
