DNP3 has been adopted as a standard in North America, enabling open standards-based interconnection. In Europe, IEC60870-5 101/103/104 is widely used for sending and receiving timestamped values ​​and performing other commands. Meanwhile, in other regions, the Modbus protocol has been primarily used to exchange data in 1-bit or 16-bit registers. To overcome these barriers between different protocols, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) developed IEC 61850 as a standard communication protocol for substation and power grid automation. IEC 61850 uses a data modeling approach to clearly describe each component of a power grid or substation as a standard logical node. This object-oriented protocol enables the integration of all protection, control, measurement and monitoring functions and provides detailed data access to power grid systems. In addition, IEC61850-3 specifies various suitability requirements for hardware and networks, such as electromagnetic immunity (EMI), surge protection, vibration and shock immunity, and the temperature range within which the device must function. Another important aspect of substation networks is cybersecurity, and the impact of a data breach on critical infrastructure can be significant.
