Long-lasting antibacterial, deodorizing, and antifouling measures using photocatalytic technology

■What is “photocatalyst”?Photocatalyst is an environmental purification technology that decomposes harmful substances and renders them harmless. During construction, we use a coating agent whose main ingredient is titanium oxide, which removes harmful substances floating in the air and decomposes and removes bacteria and viruses (*1).

Titanium oxide is a safe substance that is used in foods such as gum and cosmetics such as sunscreen. Photocatalytic construction using titanium oxide has antibacterial, deodorizing, and antifouling effects.

■ Decomposes dirt and odorsWhen the titanium oxide coating agent is exposed to light, it reacts with water and oxygen, producing activated oxygen. As a result, harmful substances such as dirt and bacteria (*1) can be broken down and a self-cleaning effect can be obtained.

*1…Effectiveness against all bacteria and viruses has not been proven.

■Hydrophilic properties prevent stainsHydrophilicity refers to the property of being easily dissolved or mixed in water. When light and water hit titanium oxide, the surface becomes covered with atomic groups called hydrophilic groups.

A characteristic of hydrophilic groups is that they have a strong ability to harmonize with water, making it easier for dirt to lift when rain or water gets on them. Cleaning is required less frequently as dirt is washed away with water.

When applying photocatalyst to an exterior wall, etc., we recommend using an anti-penetration coating to prevent rainwater from penetrating the material.

■Features of photocatalyst construction- Weather resistant
Since 100% titanium oxide is exposed on the surface, it has high performance and is weather resistant as it contains no impurities. Products from other companies often contain binders (silicon or fluorine), which tend to have poor performance and weather resistance.

■High photocatalytic function and long-term sustainabilityThe coating agent consists only of titanium oxide and water, and the size of the titanium oxide is approximately 10 to 15 nanometers (spear-shaped). Because it is smaller than the conventional spherical/needle-shaped titanium oxide, which is about 80 to 90 nanometers, it has a high photocatalytic function and is sustainable for a long time (*2).

*2... If you rub it with a hard brush, the coating may come off. When cleaning with a soft sponge, the effect lasts for 10 years outdoors and about 5 years indoors. In order to prolong its effectiveness, we recommend maintenance and inspection once every few years.

■A variety of coating agents are available to suit different materials and uses.・Undercoat: Used as a base for exterior wall painting (*No photocatalytic function)
・Top coat...used outdoors
・Indoor coat...Used indoors in general (* Visible light type)
・Glass coat: Used for glass and mirror materials
・Infiltration prevention coat: suppresses infiltration of rainwater, etc.
