About This Product

■What is Tohumaku?

TOFUMAKU refers to a silica (SiO2) thin film formed on the surface of metal, glass, resin, rubber, etc., and is a registered trademark of Nitto Shoji Co., Ltd. Tofumaku is an extremely hard film with properties such as hardness and chemical resistance comparable to quartz, and by combining the films, it can also have non-adhesive properties, and has the following characteristics. By using an organic solvent solution (basically xylene or dibutyl ether) of TOFMAK precursor as a coating solution and firing it in the atmosphere, it reacts with atmospheric moisture and oxygen, resulting in a high-purity silica (amorphous SiO2) film. Masu.

■Characteristics of Tofumaku

It hardens quickly once the solvent evaporates after application, and a hard film with properties comparable to quartz can be obtained by processing at relatively low temperatures (100-150°C). Very thin film thickness (less than μm) can be obtained. It is easy to handle because it uses a one-component processing liquid. Competing materials (siloxanes produced by the sol-gel method) leave organic groups in the silica and can only produce thin films.

■Composition of Tohumaku

The ingredient in Tohumaku is silica (SiO2).

■Types of tofumaku

There are mainly three types of Tofumaku as shown below, but various optional settings are also available to meet customer needs. ・High temperature curing type (300 to 500℃ curing) For metals and ceramics ・Low temperature curing type (80 to 300℃ curing) For metals and resins ・Room temperature curing type (room temperature to 150℃ curing) For resins, etc.

■Characteristics of Tohmaku

Tohmaku has the following properties. It also has physical properties as shown in the table. ・It has the same hardness as quartz (very hard) ・Good adhesion to the treated material ・Colorless and transparent ・Excellent heat resistance ・Excellent acid resistance ・Excellent electrical insulation ・Excellent non-adhesive and slippery properties, effective in preventing foreign matter from adhering (when combined with a film to improve non-adhesive properties)

■About the material to be treated

Tofumaku can be treated on all kinds of materials, but since it is made of silica, its adhesion (= suitability) is superior in the order of glass > metal > resin > rubber > wood. Tofumaku does not have toughness, so cracks may occur if the base material is bent. Therefore, the desired effect may not be achieved with resin or rubber. Additionally, resins and rubbers may be affected by the solvent in the processing solution.
