■What is ZNR surge absorber?“ZNR” is an abbreviation for Zinc-Oxide Non-liner Resistor, and is the trade name (registered trademark) of a voltage-dependent resistor developed by Panasonic (formerly Matsushita Electric) in 1968. Generally, it is called by names such as zinc oxide (ZnO) varistor or MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor).

The voltage-current characteristics of ZNR are symmetrical about the Y-axis (current) and exhibit a steep rise curve comparable to that of a Zener diode. Taking advantage of its properties, ZNR instantly absorbs harmful surge voltages and is used in a wide variety of applications in all fields, including office automation equipment, communication equipment, home appliances, automobiles, and power transmission lines that carry electricity, with the aim of protecting electronic equipment from destruction.

Surge voltage absorption principle and effects
■When a surge voltage is applied, a surge current flows to the ZNR surge absorber, which can limit the surge voltage.ZNR has non-linear voltage-current characteristics, and when a voltage exceeding the varistor voltage is applied, the current flowing exponentially increases rapidly. Utilizing this characteristic, only when an abnormal voltage such as a surge is applied, current flows and absorbs the surge voltage.
