About This Product

■Summary

The MPQ7231 is a fixed frequency, constant current, infrared (IR) LED driver with integrated eye safety features. The device operates over an input voltage (VIN) range of 6V to 42V. It can be configured in buck or buck-boost mode and achieve peak currents (ILED_PEAK) of up to 3A and 2.4A, respectively. MPQ7231 is ideal for driving 1 or 2 IR LEDs. The MPQ7231 provides an ultra-low on-resistance (RDS (ON) ) MOSFET with a 44mΩ high-side MOSFET (HS-FET) and a 40mΩ low-side MOSFET (LS-FET), using MPS' advanced BCD FET technology to minimize resistive losses. This improves total system losses by up to 10 times compared to traditional asynchronous architectures using Schottky diodes. As a result, the system runs cooler and is much more efficient. The MPQ7231 can support pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming frequency widths from 10Hz to 2kHz and is compatible with IR LED applications requiring 30fps, 60fps, or 120fps dimming. Constant frequency hysteresis control mode provides very fast transient response without loop compensation. Frequency spread spectrum (FSS) modulation improves EMC performance. Eye safety features include LED current limiting and factory preset dimming on-time limits (1ms, 3ms, or 5ms) to help the system meet ASIL requirements. In addition to a dedicated fault pin, the MPQ7231 provides protection features such as LED short-to-battery (or ground) protection, LED open protection, latched overcurrent protection (OCP), temperature derating, and thermal shutdown. The MPQ7231 requires a minimum of standard off-the-shelf external components to ensure a simple, compact, and efficient system design. It comes in a space-saving QFN-19 (3mm x 4mm) package.
