About This Product

■Summary

The MP2790 is a rugged battery management device that provides a complete analog front end (AFE) monitoring and protection solution. It is designed for multi-cell series battery management systems (BMS). The device can support I2C interface or Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) communication. The MP2797 supports series connection of 4-cell to 10-cell battery packs with absolute voltages greater than 80V on specific pins. The MP2790 contains two independent analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The first ADC measures the differential cell voltage of each channel (up to 10 channels), the die temperature, and the temperature of four channels through external negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors. The second ADC measures the charging and discharging current through an external current sensing resistor. Dual ADC architecture enables synchronous rectified voltage and current measurements for cell and pack impedance monitoring. When combined with the MPF4279x battery fuel gauge, the MP2790 achieves a state of charge (SOC) error within 2%. The MP2790 includes a high-side MOSFET (HS-FET) driver for independent charge and discharge control. The discharge (DSG) MOSFET driver includes a programmable soft-start (SS) to provide controlled turn-on, eliminating the need for external precharge circuitry. DSG MOSFET drivers have built-in protection features such as discharge overcurrent (DOC), short circuit (SC), battery undervoltage (UV), overtemperature (OT), and undertemperature (UT). CHG MOSFET drivers have built-in protection features such as charge overcurrent (COC), SC, battery overvoltage (OV), UT, and OT protection. All protections have configurable thresholds. Internal passive balancing MOSFETs are used to equalize mismatched cells and can support up to 58mA. There is also an option to drive external balancing transistors (MOSFETs or BJTs). The MP2790 is offered in a TQFP-48 (7mm x 7mm) package.
