About This Product

SHAPE is software that calculates and displays the morphology and symmetry of single crystals, twins, and epitaxial and other intergrowths. The mathematical theory underlying the program was published in The American Mineralogist (1980, V65, p.465).

■Features

SHAPE can draw all single crystals and most twinned and epitaxial mixed crystals. All you need to draw is the length and angle of the crystal axis, the symbol of the crystal group, and one face of each shape (the set that corresponds to the symmetry). Crystals can be rotated and expanded. You can also display stereo nets along with crystals and automatically draw stereo pairs. You can create quasicrystals and crystal sections/growth zones. A quasicrystal is similar in shape to a crystal, but its structure has an icosahedral non-crystallographic symmetry. SHAPE comes with an auxiliary program that creates a symmetric matrix in Cartesian coordinates for every point in a symmetric group. Matrices for groups of pentagons and icosahedrons are prepared in advance. SHAPE can draw cross sections from any crystal direction and depth. Furthermore, cross sections can be drawn continuously at arbitrary time intervals for crystal growth modeling of crystal cross sections. The growth rate of each shape can be fixed over time or can be determined using a general exponential growth rate equation. It is used to model twin growth, epitaxial mixed crystals, and mixed crystals in independent crystals. You can draw lines that maintain symmetry in all shapes. The center distance, which is determined based on the surface dimensions, can be changed interactively using the mouse. Anaglyph (two-color stereo pair) mode allows three-dimensional visualization using standard red/green glasses. Surfaces can be labeled using numbers or text.
