■Optimal shape for ergonomics. "Corrugated handrails" continue to spread throughout the country.The ratio of elderly people (age 65 and over) to Japan's population has exceeded approximately 25%. Japan has become the world's most aging society. With the number expected to rise to 30% in 2020 and 40% in 2050, there is an urgent need to facilitate the movement of the growing number of elderly people. The basic philosophy behind the development of corrugated handrails is to gently support people with weak legs and knees to perform the most basic human movements of standing, sitting, climbing, and descending on their own.

■Function The corrugated handrail has two functions that conventional handrails do not have.A corrugated handrail is a waveform that combines two functions: a vertical part that can be pulled and used like a handle, and a horizontal part that can be supported with the palm of your hand like a cane. These two functions make it easy to go up and down stairs and support your body safely and securely. Compared to traditional straight handrails, corrugated handrails allow for much smoother body movement.

■Effects By having a horizontal part on the handrail, the burden on the knees has been reduced to less than 1/3.In a joint study with the Human Fusion Engineering Team at the University of Shiga Prefecture, we compared the strain on legs between straight bar handrails and corrugated handrails. It has been found that when using the horizontal part of a corrugated handrail, it becomes easier to support the body weight with the palm of the hand, reducing the strain on the knees by more than one-third. As a result of this joint research, a paper titled ``Effect of Handrail Shape on the Load of Leg in Stepping Stairs'' was presented at the 2020 Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

■Evaluation Conforms to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's new barrier-free law guidelines.The corrugated handrail complies with the guidelines of the new barrier-free law under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Single-stage corrugated handrails are now being adopted in areas where two-stage handrails were previously the norm. In addition, in user evaluations, approximately 80% of people gave high ratings saying that ``the corrugated handrail is easy to use.''
