About This Product

■What is a low-speed 4-stroke engine?

It is an engine in which one cycle (period) of intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust is performed in two revolutions of the crankshaft, or four strokes (strokes) of the piston. Although low-speed 4-stroke engines tend to have larger external dimensions than medium- and high-speed engines, they exhibit superior performance in terms of ease of handling and reliability. In recent years, in order to improve propeller propulsion efficiency, we have been working on longer strokes to lower rotation speeds. As the name suggests, a low-speed 4-stroke engine is an engine with a lower engine speed than a medium-speed engine. For this reason, a reverser or CPP may be installed in between, but it is connected directly to the basic propeller. On the other hand, medium-speed engines have high engine speeds, so they must be coupled to the propeller through a reducer that reduces the engine speed.

■Features

The low-speed 4-stroke engine features a long stroke that reduces engine speed. High thermal efficiency due to sufficient combustion period due to low rotation and wide combustion area due to long stroke. In addition, the number of sliding movements is reduced due to the low rotation speed, and the number of parts is reduced as there is no need for a reducer, resulting in high reliability. High reliability results in fewer failures, longer maintenance intervals, and lower running costs due to fewer replacement parts.

■Life cycle cost

Low-speed 4-stroke engines are larger than medium-speed engines, so the price of the engine is higher. However, since a reduction gear is not required, the price of the stern is lower, but the initial investment for both is higher than that of a medium-speed engine. However, due to the low running costs that are a feature of low-speed 4-stroke engines, the cost advantage of low-speed 4-stroke engines becomes greater the longer you use the engine for 5, 10, or 15 years.

■Gas engine

The basic structure is the same as the existing low-speed 4-stroke diesel engine, which has achieved high reliability, and the combustion chamber is replaced with a gas engine, making it the world's first low-speed 4-stroke engine. In terms of environmental performance, it satisfies the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier 3 NOx regulations and does not generate soot (PM) or sulfur oxides (SOx). In addition, it is an environmentally friendly engine that has higher thermal efficiency than current diesel engines.
