About This Product

A plate beam splitter is a thin flat glass plate with a suitable optical thin film deposited on it to function as a beam splitter. Plate beam splitters offer the following advantages over cube beam splitters with similar optical functionality: Since the substrate is made of thin flat glass, it is lightweight, can be manufactured in relatively large sizes, and is inexpensive. On the other hand, the disadvantages are that the optical path length of the reflected light and the transmitted light are different, that the transmitted light is refracted, and because the thin film is deposited on the substrate surface, the film itself is easily oxidized and its optical properties deteriorate. Additionally, the incident angle condition is 45°, which complicates alignment work. 

Note that some plate beam splitters have an anti-reflection coating on the back side of the substrate. Selecting a beamsplitter with an anti-reflection coating is especially effective when incorporating the beamsplitter into the imaging optics. By eliminating unnecessary return reflections (Fresnel reflections) that occur at the interface between the back side of the beam splitter and the air, it is possible to improve the beam splitter as an optical system.
