About This Product

The Eliasson Ceiling Meter CBME80B is a compact, lightweight, stand-alone instrument that can be installed wherever accurate and reliable cloud height information is required, such as airports, automatic weather stations, and oil platforms. It works on the principle of LIDAR (LIDAR = Light Detection And Ranging), which transmits a pulsed laser vertically and measures the time it takes for it to return. Laser pulses are fired and the amplitude of the reflected light and backscattered signals caused by haze, fog, mist, precipitation, and clouds are measured. The resulting backscatter profile (e.g., signal strength versus time) is then stored and processed to determine cloud base height. If the speed of light is known, the height of the cloud base can be calculated from the time delay between firing the laser pulse and detecting its backscatter. The CBME80B's transmitter output is a low power diode laser whose output is limited to eye-safe levels. Real-time digitization technology is employed for signal detection, and a powerful microprocessor combined with FPGA is used for signal processing. CBME80B can detect up to three cloud bases simultaneously. In addition, the total cloud cover algorithm calculates up to four cloud layers and cloud cover, and detects cloud bases as well as vertical visibility and other obstructions. The embedded software includes service and maintenance functions and provides continuous status information from internal monitoring.
