Itauba is a broad-leaved tree in the Lauraceae family that is native to Brazil in South America, and along with ipe, it has been used locally for structural materials such as wooden bridges, sleepers, and telephone poles since ancient times as the most reliable wood. It is a resilient and tenacious wood that has strong bending strength and is resistant to breaking. It is highly resistant to pests such as termites, and has a durability of over 25 to 30 years, making it an extremely suitable wood for decking materials. Itauba also has a unique oil component. Even if it is in water or in the soil, this oil component prevents moisture from penetrating and suppresses corrosion. In South America and Europe, it is recognized and used as the best wood that can last for over 30 years even when used underwater. Itauba does not require embalming, so it does not have any negative effects on the body.

Itauba is relatively soft and smooth among hardwoods, so it is easier to process such as screwing and cutting than other hardwoods. Itauba is a wood decking material that is recommended for DIY beginners.

■Changes in facial expressions are also attractive

Itauba has the characteristic that its color changes when exposed to air and ultraviolet rays. At the beginning of sawing and processing, the wood is a beautiful olive color, but it changes to brownish brown and eventually settles down to a rich silver-gray color. This color change is also one of the charms of Itauba.

■Attractive price

Although the durability of Itauba is comparable to the famous hardwoods Urin and Ipe, it is currently less well-known and therefore priced very cheaply.
