■The best wood for making your first wood deckWestern red cedar is currently the most commonly used wood for decking. Western Red Cedar (WRC) is called rice cedar (beisugi) in Japan, but it is actually not a cedar, but a tree in the cypress family, genus Nezuko.

Western red cedar grows in relatively warm and rainy areas on the Pacific side of North America, and grows to be a large tree over 60 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter. For this reason, Western Red Cedar has been revered locally as the ``Tree of Life'' and an object of faith.
