About This Product

Overview

■Previously, the degree of risk of burrs was judged sensually using human fingers, but this is designed to be able to judge this more objectively.

In 1973, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) heard of Technical Engineering Service (hereinafter referred to as TES) and asked them to develop a tester to test the "sharp edge safety" of all products. TES has developed a sharp edge tester, and an item for testing using this tester has been added to the UL standard. Since then, the Sharp Edge Tester has undergone numerous improvements and has reached its current form. The sharp edge tester developed by TES has a photo published in the UL1439 standard, and is widely used as a standard device for objectively determining the safety of sharp edges. The tape kit used as the criterion is easy to attach and detach, allowing tests to be performed quickly and accurately. The tester has a built-in leaf spring to apply a certain amount of tension to the burrs and edges of the part being tested, and an arm that is designed to act as a finger is fixed to it. By adjusting the movement range of the arm, anyone can easily apply a tension of 6.7N to the part under test, and by moving it back and forth over a certain distance in a certain time while maintaining that tension, it is possible to meet the standard. You can take the test if you meet the requirements. A test tape (tape kit: hereinafter referred to as TC-3) that simulates the softness of the fingerprint surface of the index finger is attached to the tip of the arm. TC-3 is made to imitate the skin and flesh of a human finger with three layers of tape attached to the side of a cylindrical cap. Therefore, individual differences in finger stiffness can be standardized. In the test, the tape kit attached to the end of the arm of the Sharp Edge Tester is brought into contact with the burr or edge over a distance of 101.6 mm for 2 to 5 seconds while applying a tension of 6.7 N. According to UL standards, if the front two layers of a three-layer tape are cut and the third layer of black tape is exposed, the burrs and edges are dangerous and the product is judged to be rejected. If the contact distance is less than 50.8mm one way, the total contact distance over one round trip is 101.6mm. However, depending on the industry, this criterion may be used to reject the product if the first layer of tape breaks, or to test under more severe conditions by increasing the tension.
