About This Product

In standard use of UTI, excitation of Pt100 is done with a square wave voltage (AC signal) between E and F via a series connection of Rbias and Rref. This works well if the cable is short (less than 0.5m). If the connecting cable has to be longer than this, harmful capacitance can develop between the connecting cable and/or the ground cable shield, which can degrade the signal.

■Measurement principle of platinum resistance thermometer using UTI

One signal current flows through the three resistors, so the resistance value of Rpt can be obtained by measuring the voltage ratio of Rpt and Rref. The current flowing through Pt and Rref is selected by Rbias. It is recommended to set a limit value for this current value, taking into consideration the effect that Pt's self-heating has on the sensor element. To accurately measure voltage, the signal must be a properly shaped square wave (with an amplitude that is a constant fraction of the excitation signal). As the impedance of the cable increases, the square wave signal deteriorates and the corners become rounded, resulting in an error in the final reading of the white resistance thermometer output. To solve this, add four analog switches (one or two integrated circuits). Connect Rbias, Rref, and RPt in series with a 5V DC power supply and use an analog switch acting as a pulse shaper to cut off the top of the voltage above Rref and RPt into a UTI mode 11 signal format. In this way, the effect of cable impedance on measurement accuracy can be completely removed, allowing UTI to measure PT100/PT1000 values with maximum accuracy based on its specifications, independent of cable length. . In order to maintain this accuracy, it is essential to use an analog switch with extremely low leakage current (there is no difference in leakage current between Rref and RPt). No software changes are required and another small board is available as a plug-in unit.
