■What is a pool-type trapezoidal fish ladder?

The pool-type trapezoidal fishway is a trapezoidal cross-section type fishway developed by Professor Yoichi Yasuda of the Nihon University College of Engineering. Japan's rivers are short and have steep gradients from upstream to downstream, so when it rains, the water levels rise rapidly and floods reach their peak within a short period of time. Dams and weirs are constructed as flood control measures, but this poses the problem of preventing migratory fish species from migrating upstream. Where such fish migration is blocked, fish ladders are installed in rivers to aid their migration. Traditional fish ladders have a rectangular cross section and vertical walls, so water flows at the same speed both in the center and along the walls. The pool-type trapezoidal fishway developed by Professor Yasuda is characterized by the trapezoidal partition wall that separates the flow of the fishway, and the trapezoidal cross section of the fishway. The speed of water flowing through this fishway is slower along the sloped walls of the outer trapezoid than in the center, allowing small fish and aquatic insects to swim upstream while resting. In addition, when the water level rises, the structure allows the river bed sediment that has accumulated in the fishway to be discharged, reducing maintenance costs. Precast trapezoid fishway frame

■Development history

Is it possible to shorten the construction period by precasting the complex trapezoidal shape? As a result, the spawning and rearing period of salmon trout raptors etc. can be changed. It also leads to construction safety, quality, and environmental considerations. We conducted research and experiments on this issue with the Forestry Division of the Industrial Promotion Department of the Hokkaido Otoshima General Promotion Bureau and Professor Yoichi Yasuda of the Nihon University College of Engineering, resulting in the development of a precast trapezoidal fishway frame.

■Features

・The precast trapezoidal fishway frame makes it easier to process the control panel on-site and install difficult parts. - Precast trapezoidal fishway frames are installed in the corners to make positioning easier. ・The cast-in-place construction section has been made into a straight gap section between inclined walls and bulkheads, making it easier to accommodate changes in width, etc. ・By combining slanted walls and bulkheads, we have reduced the product weight to 900kg/piece, making it possible to lift it with a small crane. ・The slanted wall, bulkhead, and river bed are made of ready-mixed concrete as an integrated structure, overcoming the separate structure that is a drawback of PCa products. ・It is a hybrid structure that takes advantage of the advantages of precast trapezoidal fishway frame + ready-mixed concrete. By shortening the construction period, consideration is given to river and natural environments.
