■What is GIGA Spin Builder?

Until now, it has been impossible to generate hyperpolarized solutions of other nuclides without using advanced and complex technologies such as cryogenic temperatures, high magnetic fields, and millimeter waves. GIGA Spin Builder uses the PHIP (Para-Hydrogen Induced Polarization) method, which is a chemical polarization transfer method that utilizes the energy of parahydrogen, to easily and quickly generate data at room temperature and in a low magnetic field. This made it possible to obtain a hyperpolarized solution. Parahydrogen gas is added to a "precursor" compound with unsaturated bonds through a hydrogenation reaction. Almost all of the added hydrogen atoms have a uniform quantum state and exhibit enormous magnetization energy. Hyperpolarized compounds can be obtained by applying this magnetization energy to long-lived nuclei such as 13C nuclei for intramolecular polarization transition.

■Function

Parahydrogen gas is added to a "precursor" compound with unsaturated bonds through a hydrogenation reaction. Hyperpolarized compounds can be obtained by applying this magnetization energy to long-lived nuclei such as 13C nuclei for intramolecular polarization transition.

■Parahydrogen conversion equipment

GIGA Spin Builder requires 100% parahydrogen gas. Hydrogen exists at a ratio of orthohydrogen:parahydrogen=3:1 above room temperature. When hydrogen gas is cooled to around its boiling point (-252.9℃=20.1K), parahydrogen becomes almost 100%. Therefore, 100% hydrogen can be prepared using a parahydrogen conversion device. Hydrogen gas is passed into a vacuum chamber cooled to around 20K and the temperature is lowered to near the boiling point to produce 100% parahydrogen. Collect this in a special cylinder and set it in GIGA Spin Builder to generate hyperpolarized compounds.

■Imaging example

Cell death imaging. This is the world's first cell death imaging image using 13C-labeled fumaric acid generated using the PHIP method. Using our 1.5T-MRI device, we have successfully observed strong signals starting 20 seconds after administration. The state of acetaminophen-induced liver damage can be clearly confirmed.
