About This Product

An optical fiber stripper is a device that removes coatings on optical fibers without damaging them. It is useful when fusing optical fibers and processing the end face of optical fibers. It is compatible with cladding diameters of 60um to 1.2mm and coatings of 60um to 1.5mm, so it can be used for stripping various optical fibers.

■Mechanism of optical fiber

Optical fibers generally consist of a core, which is the path of light, and a cladding, which serves to confine the light to the core. The core has a higher refractive index than the cladding, and depending on the angle of incidence of the light on the interface, the light is totally reflected. Optical fibers utilize this phenomenon to confine light within their cores. Common optical fibers are made of quartz. Since quartz is at risk of being damaged by external forces, it is commonly coated with acrylic. This acrylic coating gets in the way when connecting optical fibers (fusion splicing = melting them together). A fiber optic stripper is a device that removes the acrylic layer coated on the quartz during such operations.

■Intermediate coating removal

A device called FBG (fiber Bragg grating) is used in optical communication and fiber laser applications. FBG is a device that has the ability to reflect only specific wavelengths by creating areas with different refractive indexes within an optical fiber. When manufacturing FBG, it is necessary to remove the coating from the optical fiber in the middle. General manual stripping tools cannot remove this kind of intermediate coating. Acrylic remains on the removed edge, and recoating on top of it can cause damage to the optical fiber. Therefore, during the FBG manufacturing process, it is necessary to cleanly remove the acrylic layer from the top of the optical fiber.
