Online focus tracker is a tool that monitors focus shifts in real time during laser processing.

During processing with high-power lasers, the laser heat creates a temperature distribution on the optical components. When optical components are heated, their shape changes and their refractive index also changes.

The fact that there is a temperature distribution means that there is also a distribution of the amount of expansion, and that there is also a distribution of the refractive index. This creates a thermal lensing effect that causes effects such as focus shift.

If a focus shift occurs during laser processing, the laser spot diameter and laser beam profile at the processing point will change, which will also affect processing quality. For example, welding penetration may become shallow, or holes may appear in only certain areas.

Synthetic silica, commonly used in high-power lasers, has high transmittance and limited thermal lensing when clean. However, once dirt adheres to the surface, it begins to absorb laser light and heat up.

The protective glass attracts dirt such as fumes and spatter during laser processing, which is the main cause of changes in the amount of focus shift during processing. The online focus tracker can monitor the amount of focus shift in real time during laser processing and can also output it.

The laser processing machine can adjust the position of the processing head based on the received signal and irradiate a beam with an appropriate spot diameter to the processing point. Additionally, laser processing machine operators regularly replace the protective glass, but this is based on experience.

By using an online focus tracker, you can obtain information on how much of the total focus shift is caused by the protective glass, which can be useful in knowing when it is appropriate to replace the protective glass. .
