■Summary
With a beam diameter of approximately 3 mm, the complete Mueller matrix, which is the polarization characteristic of the sample, is measured in 30 ms. Thanks to its high speed and measurement accuracy, AxoScan is used worldwide by polarizer/retarder film, LCD display manufacturers and many related companies.
■Mueller matrix
The Mueller matrix represents the polarization characteristics of a sample as a matrix consisting of 16 elements (4x4). AxoScan and AxoStep measure and analyze the Mueller matrix of a sample, allowing you to quickly and accurately understand the optical properties of the sample.
The measurement and analysis method using the Mueller matrix makes it possible to analyze samples that were impossible to measure and analyze using conventional measurement systems. For example, a retarder stack with a laminated structure in which the optical axis of each layer is misaligned will cause elliptical retardance in the measurement results. For such samples, measuring instruments using conventional measurement methods were unable to detect "optical axis misalignment" and only displayed incorrect results.
However, the Mueller matrix reveals all its properties. From the measured Mueller matrix, it is possible to obtain transmittance, polarization properties (polarizer efficiency, transmission axis orientation, output polarization, etc.), retardance, and depolarization properties all at once. There is no problem if new applications or new types of samples appear in the future. The Mueller matrix contains all the polarization properties of the sample. By analyzing the obtained Mueller matrix according to the application, it is possible to understand the sample.
