About This Product

Inverse Gas Chromatography (Surface Energy Analyzer), or surface energy measurement equipment, has been a pioneer at Surface Measurement Systems with Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC) for over 15 years. The iGC-SEA surface energy measurement device is a second generation inverse gas chromatography device. This device is the only commercial device in the world that is based on IGC principles. The unique SMS injection method provides a wide range of injection concentrations with unparalleled accuracy and reproducibility.

■Function

The surface energy measurement device iGC-SEA is based on the inverse gas chromatography (IGC) methodology, which is a gas phase technique for characterizing the surface and bulk properties of solid materials. The principle of IGC is very simple: it is the inverse of a traditional gas chromatograph (GC) experiment. The iGC-SEA column (linear packed column) is uniformly packed with the solid material of interest (typically a powder, fiber, or film). Next, a constant concentration of gas is injected into the column at a constant carrier gas flow rate, and a detector measures the time it takes for the pulse and concentration front to elute into the column. A series of IGC measurements using different gas-phase probe molecules allows obtaining a wide range of physicochemical properties of solid samples. Injected gas molecules passing over the material will adsorb onto the surface with a partition coefficient KS. Ks = Vn / Ws VN is the net retention volume, i.e. the volume of carrier gas required to elute the injection through the column, and WS is the mass of the sample. VN is a measure of the strength with which the probe gas interacts with the solid sample and is the fundamental data obtained from IGC experiments. From there a wide range of surface and bulk properties can be calculated.
