About This Product

■What is a free-form surface?

"Free-form surface" is a term that refers to any smooth curved surface without constraints such as symmetry. For example, it can be defined in a wide variety of ways, including analytical functions such as XY polynomials and polysurfaces modeled using 3D CAD. It has a high degree of freedom of expression, and by using it on the lens surface and reflective surface of optical elements, it can improve optical characteristics, reduce the number of optical elements, and reduce the number of units in off-axis optical systems and optical systems with different characteristics vertically and horizontally. It can be expected to have great effects in terms of size savings, etc. Free-form surfaces generally do not have axial symmetry, so they cannot be processed using ultra-precision lathes, which are usually thought of as lens processing machines. When machining free-form surfaces, it is necessary to use an ultra-precision multi-axis machining machine with a 3 to 5 axis configuration. In order to achieve the sub-μm or less shape accuracy required for optical elements, it is necessary not only to design the processing machine itself, but also to design the rotary tool, select the optimal machining path, and use CAM (*) software (*Computer-aided manufacturing). A constant temperature, vibration-proof environment is essential to ensure positioning stability during maintenance and finishing operations, which can last from several hours to several days. Shape measurement and correction machining require the same quality as machining, which is much more difficult than machining rotationally symmetric aspherical surfaces using ultra-precision lathes. NALUX has been designing and manufacturing optical elements using free-form surfaces for many years, and holds many design patents and manufacturing technologies.

■Characteristics of Nalux free-form surface machining

・Optical design considering mold processing and resin molding, optimization at the product design stage ・Stabilization of long-term finishing processing (measures against temperature, vibration, etc.) ・Highly accurate evaluation technology and correction technology compatible with free-form surfaces
