■What is tatami beri?

This is a cloth that doubles as reinforcement and decoration along the length of the tatami mat. Its role is to "tighten" the gaps that tend to form when tatami mats are laid together. During the Heian period, patterns and colors were used to express social status. Nowadays, the number of colors is abundant, and it is now possible to express it freely. ■Turtle shell pattern

In Japan, it is one of the most beloved and diverse yin-sho patterns because it is associated with the ``Tsuru-turtle'', which is a symbol of longevity and good luck. Because of the beautiful shape of the tortoise shell, it is often used in emblems, such as the emblem of Izumo Taisha (tortoise shell with a flower diamond).

■Narihira pattern

It is a combination of triple sash (miedasuki) and single sash (single sash) with petal-shaped patterns. It is also depicted on clothing in the Tale of Genji emaki.
