About This Product

■Purpose

“Cost reduction and infrastructure preservation by controlling climbing weeds” Electrostatic weeding nets are aimed at alleviating economic losses and strengthening disaster prevention due to the effects of climbing weeds (kudzu and thrush) on infrastructure such as solar power plants, roads, and railways.

■Structure

This is an electrostatic weeding net that uses arc discharge induced by an electrostatic field to damage the terminal buds of climbing weeds.

■Growth suppression effect

When the terminal bud of kudzu comes into contact with the two layers, the charged layer and the earth layer, the electrical discharge damages the terminal bud and stops its growth.

■Issues to be addressed (significance)

・Problems caused by overgrowth of climbing weeds. Decreased power generation efficiency. Electricity leakage in the power conditioner. Collapse of safety fence (fence) → Decrease in efficiency of natural energy use. ・Problems caused by weeding. Pesticide spraying...environment, cost, personnel. Mowing...Cost, personnel, gasoline. Herbivores...management, costs. →At a 1MW scale, costs in the tens of millions of dollars per year are required. Labor shortage due to aging is an issue.

■Future potential

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to use solar power to account for 14-16% of the total power generation of 934 billion kWh by 2030, with the aim of curbing global warming. In addition to maintaining and managing power generation equipment, maintenance costs and securing personnel for weeding are issues. →This research can be expected to be used as an alternative measure to ensure safety, maintain power generation efficiency, and deal with labor shortages.

■Application to road/rail infrastructure

The total length of expressways in Japan is 9,000km. Weeding costs exceed 10 billion yen/year.

■Application to forestry and agriculture

Forestry waste damage. In the forestry industry, the number of workers continues to decrease due to the aging of the population. The main job of these workers is basically forestry, and the current situation is that they are unable to deal with weed control.

■Specification safety

The power source used is a solar-powered electric fencing device (commercially available). Although the voltage is high, the current is small at a few mA, so it does not affect the human body. According to the device specifications, voltage is applied only once every second, and there is no need to worry about fire as it is not constantly charged.
