About This Product

Through integrated manufacturing of the Nippon Steel Group's distinctive metal materials, including stainless steel, from the melting process, we provide a variety of ultra-thin metal foils with high quality and excellent plate thickness accuracy, improving the performance and downsizing of various products. Contributing to We also develop a wide range of applied products, including suspension materials for hard disk drives, metal foils for current collectors in lithium-ion batteries, and foils for metal carriers for exhaust gas purification.

■Main uses

・Hard disk drive suspension ・Metal carrier for exhaust gas purification ・Dome switch, slide switch ・Surface/Strip heater ・Heat-resistant/insulating sheet ・Semiconductor substrate ・Current collector for lithium ion batteries ・Current collector for nickel metal hydride batteries ・Gas reformer/separator for fuel cells ・Lithium ion battery exterior material laminate base material About stainless steel

■Definition of stainless steel

Stainless steel is defined as steel that forms a passive film to maintain rust resistance and contains Cr as its main component.

■Why stainless steel is hard to rust

Stainless steel does not rust easily because a very thin passive film is formed on its surface. The structure of the passive film is a thin film containing Cr.

■Classification of stainless steel

-Austenitic: Materials that have been subjected to solution heat treatment are essentially non-magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. This austenitic stainless steel exhibits a wide range of mechanical properties when cold worked and may even exhibit slight magnetic properties. In addition, rapid cooling from high temperatures results in annealing, which provides maximum softness, ductility, and corrosion resistance. ・Ferrite type: Stainless steel containing 18% chromium is a typical example. This ferritic stainless steel is essentially unable to be hardened by heat treatment. It exhibits maximum softness, ductility, and corrosion resistance in the annealed state, but like martensitic stainless steel, it is magnetic. ・Martensitic type: Most alloy steels have good hardenability and exhibit a wide range of mechanical properties with appropriate heat treatment. This family of steels is ferromagnetic.
