LPVR-CAD is a location-based VR tracking system. Consumer virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) systems such as HTC VIVE and Valve Index support so-called room-scale tracking. These systems can track the user's head and controller movements, not only when the user is stationary, such as sitting, but also when the user is moving freely around the room.
The volume of this room-scale tracking is limited by specific system capabilities and is typically around 5m x 5m x 3m. While this space may be sufficient for single-user games and applications, larger tracking volumes are required for multi-user, location-based VR applications, especially arcade-style gaming setups and enterprise applications. Optical tracking systems like ART offer tracking volumes of 15mx15mx3m or more. Although the positioning accuracy of optical tracking systems is in the sub-millimeter range, it is often insufficient, especially for orientation measurements, to actually provide an immersive experience to the user. Image processing and signal routing can then introduce additional delays.
Our location-based AR/VR tracking system solves this problem by combining optical tracking information and inertial measurement data using special predictive algorithms based on head motion models.
