■Purpose

Retinitis pigmentosa and end-stage glaucoma cause visual field narrowing, and visual function deteriorates significantly, especially when the residual visual field is less than 20 degrees. As a low vision aid for visual field disorders, it has been proposed to secure visual field by looking through a telescope in reverse or by using a concave lens. Last year, Gyoro megane® was released as a pair of eyeglasses that expand central vision, so we investigated its characteristics.

■Subject and method

We measured distance visual acuity (log MAR), contrast sensitivity, and stereopsis before and after wearing Gyoro Megane® in 10 volunteers with normal eyes (6 eyes of 3 men, 14 eyes of 7 women) with an average age of 28 ± 3.0 years. The visual field was measured using a pinhole to simulate central visual field constriction, measured using a GP, and compared using area analysis software. In addition, in a simulated condition of tunnel vision, we measured changes in speed of walking and climbing stairs, and the time it took to detect an object approaching from behind.

■Results

Distance visual acuity decreased from 1.5 to 0.2, near visual acuity decreased from 1.0 to 0.25, and contrast sensitivity also decreased in all frequency ranges. Stereoscopic vision also decreased. The visual field was expanded by 44.00 times with optic collar V/4 and 4.40 times with I/3. Walking speed on flat surfaces did not change, but speed going up and down stairs decreased. The time it takes to detect objects from behind has been shortened.

■Conclusion

Wearing Gyoro Megane® expands central vision, but reduces visual acuity. When prescribing, it is necessary to pay attention to this property.
