About This Product

■Product overview

It consists of a Raspberry Pi 4B, LiDAR (TFmini-S), and a turntable (HAT for Pi), and operates with a Python program. A single LiDAR can operate as a 3D scanner. It is also possible to process the acquired point cloud data (PCD) into mesh data using MeshLab and output it to a 3D printer. It can be used from basics to advanced applications.

■Background/Characteristics

LiDAR (light detection and ranging) uses an infrared laser to measure distance based on the intensity of reflection (time of flight) and can obtain 3D images with high resolution. In the future, it will be used for many applications such as autonomous driving, surveying, robots, and 3D scanners. This time, we are offering an inexpensive development kit that operates as a 3D scanner with a LiDAR (TFmini) that can measure up to 12m and a rotating table that can rotate up to 180 degrees, allowing you to learn and experience the basics. We recommend it to companies, schools, etc. that plan to develop and introduce LiDAR in the future. The Raspberry Pi OS has been updated to bullseye released in October 2021 (2022/1/31).

■What is LiDAR?

LiDAR is an acronym for "light detection and ranging," and is also sometimes called laser lidar, infrared lidar, or 3D lidar. The principle is to emit a laser beam, measure the time it takes for it to hit an object and bounce back, and then measure the distance and direction to the object. Simply put, unlike radar, which uses radio waves to measure, LiDAR uses laser light to measure. Its characteristics are that it has a higher luminous flux density than radio waves, and by using laser light with a short wavelength, it can detect positions and shapes with high precision.
