■Maintain SPRT and HTPRT at the highest level of performance
・Protection against contamination
・Annealing SPRT and HTPRT
・Fully programmable
SPRT is the most accurate instrument you can buy, so I spent a lot of money to equip my lab with the world's best SPRT. Once you have them, part of your job is to maintain them at peak performance levels. This can be addressed by the Hart Model 9117 annealing furnace.
HTPRTs and SPRTs are subject to mechanical shock, no matter how carefully they are handled. This impact changes the platinum's resistive properties, which manifests itself as temperature measurement errors. To reduce distortion of platinum sensors caused by mechanical shock, NIST recommends annealing prior to SPRT calibration.
In addition to removing mechanical distortion, the annealing process also removes oxidation on the sensor after long-term use at temperatures between 200°C and 450°C. Oxidation affects the purity of the element and therefore the accuracy of temperature readings. The oxide is easily removed by annealing at 660°C for 1 to 2 hours.
Contamination must be controlled during the annealing process. At temperatures above 500°C, the lattice structure of the quartz sheath becomes permeable to metal ions. The thermometer must be clean and its sheath must be free of all contaminants.
Annealing should only be performed in a temperature furnace designed to prevent the generation of metal ions during its heating cycle. Hart's 9117 Temperature Furnace solves this problem by using a graphite block wrapped in quartz that is specially prepared to protect it from contamination before assembly.
This temperature furnace also features a programmable controller specifically designed for annealing processes. As the manufacturer of SPRTs, Hart's measurement engineers understand all aspects of SPRT use and calibration procedures, including annealing processes. At Fluke, we use this temperature furnace in our own labs, so we know exactly how good it is.
