■Internal structure
Why does it switch between transparent and opaque instantly? What makes this mysterious effect possible is a light control film sandwiched between glass. The liquid crystal molecules in the film are normally arranged irregularly (OFF), which causes light to diffuse, resulting in an opaque appearance.
When voltage is applied there, the liquid crystal molecules align (turn on) and allow parallel light to pass through. This is a mechanism that switches between transparent and opaque.
