Oldham couplings mainly absorb eccentricity by sliding between the hub protrusion and the slider groove. It is characterized by the ability to load a large torque for its small diameter, but if a large torque and eccentricity are applied at the same time, the slider groove may wear out and cause an increase in backlash. This tendency is particularly strong with metal sliders, and if you do not want to increase backlash due to wear, it is necessary to keep the eccentricity sufficiently small.
■Slider damage
Compressive stress is applied to the slider of the Oldham coupling at the part between the protrusions of the drive and driven hubs, and a force that tries to escape toward the outer circumference is applied. If an excessive load torque is applied to the coupling, the slider will deform beyond its elastic limit and break, as if torn off. When the slider breaks like this, it can be determined that excessive torque was applied.
