About This Product

It is quite difficult to demagnetize toroidal cores with high magnetic permeability, such as PC permalloy cores. By using vacuum tubes, it is now possible to gradually reduce the current exponentially.

■Summary

This degaussing device is mainly used to demagnetize the core when measuring the output voltage after degaussing of a zero-phase current transformer (ZCT). One of the standards for ZCT is something called overcurrent leakage characteristics or overinput characteristics. This stipulates that the rate of change between the output voltage after demagnetization and the output voltage after magnetization is 10% or less or 15% or less. In other words, it is a comparison of the output voltage at the origin of the BH loop and the output voltage at the residual magnetic flux density Br point. Magnetization can be easily done by passing a direct current through the core that saturates the core. However, it is extremely difficult to stably demagnetize the core. It is also very difficult to check whether degaussing has been completed completely. Since there is no other choice, the best demagnetization method is to perform demagnetization and magnetization alternately, measure the output voltage each time, measure the average value and variation, and obtain the highest average value. Moreover, a method with small variation is considered to be a stable method. This device uses a vacuum tube to send demagnetizing current to the core. This takes advantage of the principle that by turning off the power to the vacuum tube, the current decays cleanly as the tube cools down to zero current. This device has made it possible to achieve stable demagnetization. This device is particularly effective in demagnetizing ring cores. In addition to ZCT, it can also be used to demagnetize general CTs and transformers, but its effectiveness should be confirmed individually. The magnitude of the demagnetizing current must be set so that the magnetizing force is approximately twice the coercive force of the core. It is a device that can flow up to 1A of current. If large magnetization is required, there is no problem by increasing the number of windings.

■Demagnetization waveform

A degaussing current is passed through the wire passed through the core. The core is demagnetized by gradually decreasing this demagnetizing current until it reaches zero. The photo below shows the attenuation data of the degaussing current in this device. You can see that it is beautifully attenuated and zero current is achieved.
