The SunScan crop portable canopy analysis system uses field measurements of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the crop canopy to provide valuable information on leaf area index (LAI) and biomass production.

■Features

SunScan is a simple and flexible system for measuring and analyzing incident and transmitted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) within crop canopies. It provides important information about PAR penetration into crops, and is essential in comparative crop studies to isolate the effects of variety and treatment. Particularly suitable for low, regular canopies such as those found in many agricultural crops. SunScan can be used under most light conditions (best near noon). ・Measure the incident and transmitted PAR in the plant canopy ・Direct display of leaf area index (LAI) ・Measure the total solar radiation and scattered solar radiation of incident light ・Can be used under cloudy, sunny, and variable conditions ・Portable, weatherproof, battery powered

■SunData software modeling

SunScan uses a sophisticated model of light transmission through a uniform canopy, based on the work of Campbell (1985) and Norman and Jarvis (1975), which considers the following factors: ・Direct light and diffused light ・PAR absorption amount of leaves ・Canopy leaf angle distribution ・Canopy leaf area index ・Solar zenith angle The solar zenith angle is calculated from the actual time, latitude and longitude. The leaf angular distribution and leaf uptake are estimated by the user. All other variables required for LAI calculation are directly measured.
