■Summary

The SAP4 porometer utilizes the principle of cyclic diffusion to provide accurate, reproducible and convenient field measurements of stomatal conductance. Stomatal aperture is the dominant factor in leaf surface diffusive conductance, which controls both water loss from plant leaves and CO2 uptake for photosynthesis. Therefore, measurements of diffusive conductance are important indicators of plant water status and provide valuable insights into plant growth and adaptation to environmental variables.

■Data processing

The AP4's onboard memory can store up to 1,500 readings and includes a memo function. Data can be exported to computers, printers, and pocket terminals via an RS232 link. The data format is suitable for direct input into standard analysis software including Excel. The data set consists of readings, reading labels, time, light level, temperature, and relative humidity. You can add notes of up to 30 characters for each reading using the keypad.

■Accessories

Changes in barometric pressure between calibration and actual measurement will affect the resistance measurement: a 1kPa change can cause a 1% error in the measured resistance. Extreme changes in weather can have this effect, but altitude is usually the larger factor, with a rate of change of 1kPa per 100m. The PBR1 wristwatch barometer is suitable for monitoring local barometric pressure.
