About This Product

■What is artificial graphite?

There are no manufacturers in Japan that specifically aim to produce artificial graphite powder, but they use artificial graphite electrodes as raw material and pulverize them. In this case, you must be careful that due to the manufacturing process of artificial graphite electrodes, carborundum adheres to the surface, and if this gets mixed in, it will significantly impede lubricity, so it will be difficult to remove it. Artificial graphite generally has a high quality of about 0.5% ash, 0.5% volatile content, 99% fixed carbon, and 0.02% total sulfur, but its fire resistance and lubricity are inferior to natural graphite. To briefly describe the manufacturing process of artificial graphite electrodes, oil coke is the main raw material, pitch and tar are added to it, heated, kneaded, shaped, fired at 1,000 to 1,200 degrees (primary firing), and then graphitized. When placed in a furnace and fired at a temperature of 2,800 to 3,000 degrees, the coke graphitizes and forms electrodes.

■Main uses

・Carbon brush ・Carburizer for castings ・Welding rod ・Gouging carbon ・For dry batteries ・Reducing agent ・Rubber resin ・Friction materials such as brake pads

■Why graphite is used for carbon brushes

Graphite has the following properties. Graphite, which is a good conductor of electricity, has a low coefficient of friction, and has high heat resistance, is a hexagonal crystal, and is an interlayer compound that is connected by weak molecular bonds. The material properties required for carbon brushes include low frictional force on a high-speed rotating (moving) body, the ability to receive and supply a large amount of current, and the ability to withstand heat generation and oxidation. The properties of graphite are exactly the same. This is why graphite is used in carbon brushes.
