A Fresnel lens is an optical element with a special shape invented by the Frenchman Augustin Jean Fresnel. This is a lens that reduces the thickness of a normal lens by dividing it into concentric areas.
It consists of an acrylic lens with a flat surface and precise concentric circles, and has optical properties similar to ordinary optical lenses.
■What is Fresnel lens?
This lens was created using the Fresnel diffraction principle proposed by Augustin Jean Fresnel (France), and is an acrylic lens with a flat surface that has virtually the same optical properties as a normal curved lens. Fresnel lenses are composed of precisely shaped concentric grooves, each groove surface forming a different angle and depth, allowing incident light to be refracted and transmitted.
This results in a large-diameter groove-shaped lens, which offers advantages in shape and economic efficiency such as light weight and low cost that cannot be obtained with ordinary glass lenses. Another advantage of the material is that it is easy to machine, and has superior light transmittance compared to uncoated short glass lenses, achieving a transmittance of over 90% for visible light wavelengths.
■Applications of Fresnel lenses
It has been applied to camera viewing lenses, condenser lenses for overhead projectors, rear projection screens, and in recent years, it has also been used to collect light to utilize solar energy, as well as LED lighting lenses and lenses for optical sensors.
