■MTF inspection equipment for industry and research

Modulation transfer function (MTF) is a recognized control criterion for optical image quality. This characterizes the resolution of the optical system on axis and in the image field. In addition to MTF, many other parameters can be measured, such as focal length, chromatic aberration, distortion, astigmatism, curvature of field, and depth of field. OEG's MTF bench provides fully automated on-off axis characterization of the imaging quality of any azimuth and type of object, image conjugate, by measuring the modulation transfer function (MTF). This operating area covers almost all standard optics in the visible and near-infrared spectral range. Since 1991, OEG GmbH is used in the field of MTF measurement. The OEG-MTF bench is satisfied by many German and international considerable optical manufacturers in production control. It is also used in laboratories and laboratories.

■Reason for MTF measurement

Despite sophisticated design and manufacturing techniques, lenses can still vary widely in imaging quality due to manufacturing tolerances. Due to the ever-increasing demands on the imaging performance of lenses, its properties are increasingly used with the help of the modulation transfer function (MTF) as the most important parameter for objective evaluation. The optical industry uses this parameter as a meaningful quality function for objective evaluation of optical systems. MTF describes how image contrast varies with spatial frequency. It is expressed as the ratio of image and object contrast as a function of the spatial frequency of the line grid in a cosine function transfer. Spatial frequency is expressed in line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm). MTF is expressed in terms of image resolution and contrast. Another feature of MTF instruments is that they allow system testing under conditions similar to real applications. The viewing angle position, spectral range, and distance between the object and image planes can be replicated or simulated in testing optical systems.

■Measurement principle

MTF measurements are based on evaluation of the test chart image provided by the lens being tested. Edges or gaps (hair crosses) are used as in the test chart.
