Although electronic devices are becoming smaller in size, their power consumption remains largely unchanged. Coin batteries are not shrinking in size or increasing in capacity as quickly, but matching them to design will require unprecedented innovation. Vertical coin cell holders allow the coin cell to have a smaller footprint, but at the cost of a much larger height above the board.
The new Verticals parts require the holder to be partially mounted onto the board, like the Minis product family, by cutting small holes into the PCB. This minimizes the height increase, which can typically be reduced by nearly 1 cm. If footprint is a big issue, think vertically.
