About This Product

■Product overview

Knobel® is a new carbon material that has a structure not found in conventional porous materials and is difficult to obtain as an industrial material. In particular, there are many mesopores (pores with a size of 2 to 50 nm) controlled using a unique technology within the structure, and the structure is characterized by a structure called "communicating pores" in which mesopores are connected to each other. This characteristic structure contributes to the expression and improvement of functions not seen with existing materials.

■Familiar porous materials

A porous material is a material that has many pores. In recent years, applications have expanded from applications such as filters and analytical instruments that take advantage of the adsorption function of pores to energy storage devices such as electricity and heat.

■Porous materials and pores

Porous materials are classified into microporous materials, mesoporous materials, and macroporous materials depending on the size of their pores. Applicable porous materials vary depending on the target substance. Knobel® is a mesoporous carbon material that has never existed before.

■“Communication hole” structure controlled by unique technology

Knobel® has a three-dimensional network structure of mesopores controlled using proprietary technology, and is characterized by a structure called "communicating pores" in which these mesopores are connected. This structure contributes to the expression and improvement of functions not seen with existing materials.

■Control of chemical functions in surface structure

Carbon materials have chemical species called functional groups on their surfaces, and the chemical properties of the surface change greatly depending on the presence or absence of functional groups. Knobel® allows for control of chemical function without changing physical properties. Therefore, by controlling the surface condition, chemical functions such as water wettability can be controlled.

・Electrochemical applications/carbon carrier for fuel cells Knobel has a large number of characteristic mesopores, which increases catalytic activity and supports high output and low platinum production. ・Adsorption/desorption application: Selective adsorption in flow-through filtration It exhibits faster adsorption performance compared to general activated carbon. Since adsorption and concentration can be performed in a short time, it contributes to shortening process time and downsizing processing equipment. In addition, by selecting mesopores that match the molecular size, it is possible to adsorb and concentrate macromolecules (e.g. proteins, enzymes) that are difficult to adsorb with activated carbon.
