Lonza's human adipocyte-derived stem cells are isolated from adipose tissue from healthy donors or type I and type II diabetic donors. Cells can be selected from lots based on donor characteristics such as age, gender, race, and BMI. Lonza has exclusive rights to sell adipose-derived stem cells to the research market under U.S. Patent No. 6,777,231 from the University of Pittsburgh, effective March 5, 2010. Cells are cryopreserved at the first passage stage. These cells have been reported in several publications to differentiate into a variety of cell lineages, including chondrogenic cells, osteoblasts, adipogenic cells, myoblasts, neural and endothelial cells.
