The hydrogen sulfate ion, a monovalent anion, is represented by the chemical formula HSO4-. It is also known as the hydrogen sulfate anion or simply hydrogen sulfate.
Salts of the hydrogen sulfate ion, generally represented by the formula M(I)HSO4, are obtained by dissolving sulfate salts in sulfuric acid.
Hydrogen sulfate salts are easily soluble in water, and many aqueous solutions are acidic.
Upon heating, hydrogen sulfate initially dehydrates to form bisulfate. Further heating leads to the release of SO3, resulting in the production of sulfate. Using this process, water-soluble sulfates can be obtained by adding potassium hydrogen sulfate to samples such as phosphates, oxides, and slugs of basic metal elements and melting them at 400 °C. This is known as hydrogen sulfate melting. Potassium hydrogen sulfate is used as a melting agent for this analysis.
Hydrogen sulfate ion reacts with various cations to produce salts. It is primarily used for melting insoluble salts, as mentioned earlier, and for cleaning platinum crucibles.
In addition, potassium hydrogen sulfate KHSO4, a typical hydrogen sulfate, is used in fertilizers, grape wine production, and as a food preservative.
Additionally, sodium hydrogen sulfate (NaHSO4) finds applications in the disinfection of drinking water, in the manufacturing of cement, perfumes, glue, and bricks, as a surface treatment agent for metals, as a pH adjuster, in soap, and in paper manufacturing.
