Table of Contents
Ethylcyclohexane is an organic compound consisting of cyclohexane with a ring of six carbons and an ethyl group.
It is also called hexahydroethylbenzene or cyclohexylethane, and is represented by the molecular formula C8H16. It exists as a liquid at room temperature and is a relatively stable compound.
It can be produced by introducing ultrafine bubbles into a mixture of benzene and hydrogen gas.
The main uses of ethylcyclohexane are as a solvent for cleaning agents, paints, and printing inks. Among printing inks, it is often used as a raw material for ink materials with excellent coloring and preservation properties.
It is also used in place of xylene in paint applications as a solvent with low photochemical reactivity. Although highly stable, it is toxic with respect to the aquatic environment regardless of its duration of use, so it must be disposed of by a specialized waste disposal company licensed by the prefectural governor.
Ethylcyclohexane has a molecular weight of 112.21, CAS No. 1678-91-7, and is a colorless, odorless liquid (20°C, 1 atm).
The physical properties include: Melting point -113°C, boiling point, first distillation point and boiling range 132°C, flash point 35°C, spontaneous combustion temperature 238°C, lower and upper explosive limits 0.9-6.6 vol%.
For thermal properties, the SDS should be checked before use since the values vary by 10 to 20°C depending on the manufacturer.
Kinematic viscosity is 0.787 mPa-s (25°C), vapor pressure 12.8 mmHg (25°C), density 0.7879 g/cm3
Solubility in water is 6.3 mg/L. It is miscible with acetone, ethanol, and toluene. It is stable under normal handling, but may generate static electricity when flowing or stirring.
It reacts violently with strong oxidizers, and there is a high risk of fire or explosion. Also, combustion produces toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
Produces highly flammable liquid and vapor, which may be dangerous to life if swallowed or if it enters the respiratory tract. Contact with skin will cause dryness and redness.
Caution should be exercised, as it can be easily ignited by heat, flame, or sparks. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air. Vapor is heavier than air and tends to accumulate in low, enclosed areas (sewers, basements, tanks).
When storing, keep away from heat, sparks, naked flames, and other ignition sources, and away from oxidizing agents. Containers should be stored in a cool, well ventilated, closed area, away from direct sunlight. Storage areas should be fireproof and made of noncombustible materials.
Since ethylcyclohexane is a flammable liquid, be aware of the three combustion factors (combustibles, oxygen donors, and ignition sources) when handling it. Since flammable vapors are generated, work should be performed in areas with local or general ventilation.
It is important to keep containers tightly closed and work areas grounded to prevent the generation of static electricity. It is also recommended that explosion-proof electrical equipment, ventilation equipment, and lighting equipment be used.
Workers should wear protective gloves, protective clothing, protective glasses, and protective masks. After work, even if protective gloves are worn, wash hands thoroughly and finish work.
In case of fire, use powder fire extinguisher, carbon dioxide, or ordinary foam for small fires. For large fires, use water spray, water spray, or ordinary foam. Do not use stick fire extinguishing method: water pouring.
If on the body, immediately remove all contaminated clothing and rinse the skin thoroughly with water. If swallowed, immediately contact a physician, do not force vomiting, and follow the physician's instructions.
If inhaled, move to a location with fresh air and rest in a position comfortable for breathing. In case of eye contact, the eyes should be rinsed carefully with water for several minutes.
