A desuperheater is a device that further superheats steam generated in a boiler to produce high-temperature superheated steam.
It consists of long steel tubes through which steam flows on the inside and is heated by combustion gases on the outside.
When there is a high demand for superheated steam, the heat source is commonly obtained by superheating the fuel gas. Conversely, in locations with low consumption or where securing fuel is difficult, superheated steam is generated by electric heating.
To raise the steam temperature to over 400 °C, special steel tubes with high mechanical strength and toughness, such as chrome-molybdenum steel, are used. Heat treatment of these tubes results in improved efficiency in devices like steam turbines.
Superheated steam produced by a desuperheater is characterized by reduced water droplet formation, making it desirable for drying processes requiring strict moisture control, as minimal water droplet formation is preferred for such applications.
