■Summary The ONRH rheometer is a rheometer that uses a rotating outer cylinder double cylinder system that is ideal for rheological measurements of low viscosity liquids. The torque measurement section is equipped with an elastic hinge type bearing manufactured by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, which enables high-sensitivity torque measurement without using air bearings. By not using air bearings, there is no need to manage clean air, and you can now choose the installation location more freely. At the same time, this rheometer has advantages in terms of ease of maintenance, size and cost, and is designed to achieve both ease of use and performance. ■Outer cylinder rotation method that is advantageous for measuring low viscosity liquids In addition to the advantage that the outer cylinder rotation method does not generate the Taylor vortices that occur with the inner cylinder rotation method, the inner cylinder that measures torque is stationary and the moment of inertia can be reduced, making it possible to measure dynamic viscoelasticity at high frequencies and high speeds. This is useful for measuring sensitivity. The hemispherical bottom geometry suppresses the generation of vortices at the bottom, prevents bubbles from remaining at the bottom end of the inner cylinder, and has the advantage of reducing sample volume. ■Top support for outer cylinder using glass outer cylinder and hollow shaft motor The major external feature of the ONRH rheometer is the use of a glass outer tube that is supported from above. The presence of air bubbles, etc. can be confirmed, improving measurement reliability. The method of grasping the outer cylinder from above allows for the installation of the outer cylinder and the setting of the inner and outer cylinders to be completed at the same time, making it possible to start measurements quickly. ■Elastic hinge type bearing A bearing that incorporates a parallel spring mechanism, which is the basic mechanism of highly sensitive electronic balances, was devised and we call it an elastic hinge type bearing. By using an elastic hinge type bearing, it is now possible to measure torque with the same feeling as an electronic balance. The mechanism eliminates the need for air bearings, which were essential for high-sensitivity torque measurement, greatly easing restrictions on installation locations and eliminating the need for air bearing maintenance, leading to overall cost reductions. ■Torque measurement using voice coil motor A feature of voice coil motors is that the force generated has an extremely linear proportional relationship with the current flowing through the coil, making it possible to measure with a wide dynamic range of 7 digits. In combination with the coaxial double cylinder geometry, highly reproducible viscosity measurements are possible. For example, if the viscosity of a sample is an indicator of long-term stability, continuous measurement with this device will make it possible to judge whether the sample is good or bad in a relatively short period of time.
